I love helping people. I've been that way since I was young. I'm fasinated with how different people or groups transform and heal. I'm always looking for ways to follow my river's current and assisting with others if they need help. "Don't push the river" is the line I love. Through the last 14 years of my practice, I've been looking for the way of least resistance. Massage teaches me to become aware, get in my body and participate. Craniosacral teaches me to listen for the subtle messages underneath the storm and follow. And Bowenwork teaches me that when you send a simple message to the healer within you, your body responds thru your breath, finds balance and begins again.

I'm excited to be a part of the Nurture collective. I love when people come together to unite great ideas. I am practicing Group Bowenwork Monday's 4-7pm at Nurture for $30-50. sliding scale, by appointment only. Group Bowenwork is where 2-3 people can be treated at a time, so bring your friends or family. Bowenwork is a gentle modality that uses minimal touch with precise moves, to create a resetting of the body's various systems. It elicits a deep relaxation and subtle or powerful re-alignment. I also practice at my home studio monday-friday, you can check out my prices and info at www.asimplebalance.net.

Nurture Welcomes Kimberly Smith

I am a licensed massage therapist with ten plus years of experience, as well as a middle and high school teacher with my Master of Arts in Teaching. I’m happily returning to the healing arts after a five year sabbatical. During this time, I was healing from a major health crisis, which I call, my “universal time-out,” working on a new career path of becoming a teacher and becoming a mama for the first time! All of these experiences have been fruitful and meaningful leading me to where I am today at NURTURE!

I look forward to reconnecting with past clients and building new clientele. My style of massage is a mixture of both eastern and western styles. I don’t have a specific name for it, but I tailor each session with what you need on that particular day. I have a background as an athlete, so I can focus attention on sports injuries and/or sore muscles from a good workout or I can just give you a time-out relaxation massage. I loved Shiatsu and learning about the meridians and ancient healing methods, so I often combine shiatsu with deep tissue and myofacial work. I believe that giving yourself time to be connected with your body is healing within in itself. I love helping people take time outs in this busy world we all live in. Hope you can come take a time out with me soon!

Client Testimonials:
"I’ve gotten quite a bit of massage therapy and Kimberly has my vote for the best Oregon has to offer. Though not a big person, her strength is consistent and surprising. Her hands find tension and knots like they are color-coded. She manages to make a very intense and healing massage also completely soothing and enjoyable. And to top it off, she uses wonderful products, has a happy energy about her and will make any sort of day your having much better. She’s a treasure for all her clients.”

“Kimberly is a natural healer. Not only do her hands find every bit of tightness and stress in your body, her gentle way of getting in deep without hurting you is astounding. She fixes things all over your body without you realizing it. You just walk out thinking you should visit her far more often.”

Hours: I am currently available for massages on Fridays 10-6 and some weekends.

Rates:$70.00/hr. & $90.00/hr. and a half

Packages: $180.00 for (3) 1-hour massages & $240.00 for (3) 90-minute massages Gift Certificates available upon request!

INFANT MASSAGE: I am happy and eager to announce that I have found a way to combine my love of massage with my passion for teaching by becoming an Infant Massage Instructor. Excited to get classes up and running in December 2010. More information coming soon!

Nurture Welcomes Brittney McAlmond

Hi and thanks for checking me out on the Nurture blog!

I became interested in massage therapy after studying alternative medicine recreationally for some time. I love the body's amazing ability to heal and grow and wanted to work in an environment that supported that. Combined with a love of working with my hands, I found massage therapy to be the perfect way to express this support of wholeness in the individual.

I graduated from the Massage Therapy program at Everest Institute in Tigard, Oregon in 2009. The schooling consisted of 800 hours of training; bookwork as well as hands on. I received my license in the state of Oregon soon after, and became a professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association. I was practicing massage early in 2010 as well as continuing my education through the Oregon School of Massage. Recently I created the company Phi Massage, and you can visit my website at www.phi4massage.com.

I am excited to become a part of the Nurture family and to work with its members! Right now new clients receive a $15 discount off my regular prices and I also offer a free 30 minute consultation for those who would like to know how massage can benefit them personally before they commit to seeing a therapist.

In addition to being a birth doula, teaching infant massage workshops, Tiffany is a massage therapist offering pediatric, pre-natal, swedish, deep tissue, thai, and now Arvigo Technique Maya Abdominal Massage (ATMAM).

What is Maya Abdominal Massage?
Maya Abdominal Massage is a non-invasive, external, massage technique. It guides internal abdominal organs into their proper position for optimum health and well-being. Maya massage improves organ function by releasing physical and emotional congestion from the abdomen. This massage is effective for both men and women.

The technique applies anatomy, physiology, herbology and naprapathy, (study of the ligaments, joints and muscles), with Ancient Maya healing techniques to address common female and male complaints. The technique works by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of chi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent the progression of chronic disease symptomology.

Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, developed these techniques, after apprenticing with Don Elijio Panti, the last of the Traditional Maya Shaman in Central America, where she has lived for over 30 years. Nurture Welcomes Joey Torgrimson

We are excited to welcome Joey Torgrimson to Nurture. Joey is a midwife and massage therapist with a heart for helping families. Here is some information from Joey about her background and services...

I began my career in natural health care in the late 1990’s at Oregon
School of Massage. I have been practicing massage therapy for 9 years.
In 2008 I became a homebirth midwife in addition to my massage practice,
through a combination of formal study at Birthingway College and
apprenticeship. The two modalities complement each other well.

My massage specialties include deep tissue and pregnancy. I have a
midwifery practice, Portland Natural Childbirth, and my specialty is
waterbirth. I believe in meeting people where they are, and supporting
them in creating the picture of health they chose for themselves based on
their own values, belief systems, and bodies.

As an Oregon native, I enjoy living in Portland with my 8 year old
daughter Emma, travel, the outdoors, music, dancing, and surfing (in a very
thick wetsuit).

For more information about my midwifery practice, please visit my website
at Portland Natural Childbirth, call (503)875-6257 or e-mail me at midwife@portlandnaturalchildbirth.com

A Birth Day Celebration

Tiffany Ueltschi, a massage therapist and doula with Nurture, hosted a celebration to show her appreciation of her clients for allowing her to be a part of their miraculous experiences of pregnancy and birth. In addition to the many beautiful families, some professionals in the community came to celebrate and share information.

Tiffany's friend and photographer, Scott Mittmann, was there to capture some highlights of the evening:

Alexandra Demetro, ND, is a naturopathic doctor and a midwife. She shared about breastfeeding and baby's first foods.
Dominic Anaya, DO, LMT shared about gentle and healing craniosacral therapy. He believes that craniosacral is so important (as do we) that he offers a free session for infants up to 1 year old.

And Dr. Demetro's wonderful twin sister, Christina Demetro, massage therapist and sculptor.

Tiffany and a sweet doula baby with a hat made by Tiffany's mother.

More sweet babies!

Sarah Dykes, also a massage therapist at Nurture, sharing in the joy of the celebration.

Postpartum Body Image Ideas Part 1

Earlier this week I wrote about postpartum body image and accepting the changes in our bodies after pregnancy. One mother, who wrote to me in response to the original post, stated that she loves her body more now than she did before she ever got pregnant because of the awe she feels towards her body's capacity for creating and sustaining her children during pregnancy and postpartum through nursing. I thought it was a beautiful viewpoint so I wanted to share it.

As promised, I have some ideas for nurturing your mama-body.

I want to note that acceptance may be a process, particularly because a woman's body continues to change for a time postpartum and postpartum is a time of much giving, little receiving and we often neglect our physical and emotional needs. Also because in our culture, one has to fight the negative self-perceptions which arise from being exposed to media images (which are actually touched up and not even real) and unhealthy standards in our society.

Here is the first idea...

Make the time, on a regular basis-weekly or once a month, to get a massage. Healing touch can be a powerful way to experience your body and promote an emotional reconnection. Allowing someone else to care for your body, especially if you experience that person as nonjudgmental and affirming, can facilitate integration and acceptance of your new body form. Although there is benefit from getting out of the house to go to an appointment, many massage therapists are willing to come to your home, which can save you time from being away from your baby. You can arrange the massage during a time that your partner or someone else could take your baby for a walk so that you will have a peaceful environment. If finances are a barrier, a gentle back rub from your partner or trusted friend could be an alternative.

Even if you are several years postpartum but still struggling with accepting your body, a massage can be a helpful part in working towards acceptance.

We have two massage therapists at Nurture, Sarah Dykes and Tiffany Ueltschi.
