Postpartum Depression article on WebMD

Wendy Davis of Baby Blues Connection (BBC) and Postpartum Support International (PSI) passed this on this article, Postpartum Depression: More Common than You Know, found on WebMD. I particularly like this quote from the president of PSI, Birdie Gunyon Meyer, RN, MA, CLC, also the coordinator of the Perinatal Mood Disorders Program at Clarian Health in Indianapolis:

Even highly intelligent women don't recognize what they have, and when they do try to reach out, people just say, 'Yeah, that's motherhood. It's tough.'

I might add that sometimes even therapists and counselors, who are trained to recognize the signs of depression, do not recognize that they have a perinatal mood disorder. Hopefully with public education, more women and families will recognize the signs of it and get help. In addition to lack of information, there is quite a bit of fear and shame associated with postpartum mood disorders. Hopefully, that will change too.

Please pass on this article and get help if you or someone you know may have a perinatal mood disorder. It can be treated, the effects can be minimized, you will get better, there is hope.

Parenting Unplugged Radio

Yet another great parenting resource here in Portland, OR, Parenting Unplugged Radio. I found out about this radio show from another mama on a local mama yahoo group. The show airs every Tuesday at 10 pm, but you can also download it from the pdx.fm site. This week the show hosts, Laura and Todd Mansfield, interviewed Dr. Sears about the H1N1 virus.

Diaper Changing Station at Green Sprouts Organic Baby and Family Fest

We have been hosting a diaper changing/nursing area (and more) booth at the King Farmers Market on Sundays. This Saturday (9/26 from 10-5) we will be bringing our booth to the Green Sprouts Organic Baby and Family Fest.

If you have not been to the Green Sprouts Festival, I would like to personally say that it is a fun family event. Last year, I had a great time sneaking away from our booth (that's me with my daughter strapped to my chest in that picture!) to enjoy some activities and educational workshops.

This year we will be over by the picnic tables and restrooms, stop by and say hello, learn about all of the wonderful services Nurture has to offer, change a diaper, or hang out and nurse your child in a comfortable chair. We will have a changing table, wipes generously donated by the Alberta Cooperative Grocery, a few extra plastic bags for soiled cloth diapers in case you forget your wet bag, hand sanitizer, a comfortable chair for nursing, a play space for siblings, and more.

Children's Book: The Apple Pie that Papa Baked

Apple season is just about here, reminding me of a most fabulous book: The Apple Pie that Papa Baked written by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by Jonathan Bean.

This delicious book (I had to say it) brings me so much joy. A couple of years ago, I gave it to a dear friend for her second birthday, and I have been meaning to get a copy for my children ever since.

Written in a spirally-this-is-the-House-that-Jack-Built fashion, with humor and warmth, this book celebrates the earthy, worldly elements in a sweet (again) story of an apple pie from roots to table. The father-daughter love and sharing within this book makes me long for my childhood yearly apple orchard trips complete with cider, apples, and of course, apple pie.

In my head, it goes without saying that the illustrations are perfectly matched to this story. I like to believe that if I had heard the story before seeing the artwork, I would have imagined the very same pictures, or very close. Simple yet intricate, nostalgic yet fresh, raw yet gentle, scruffy yet whimsical, and so much subtle beauty to warm your heart.

And here is a (because it's another pie themed book) recipe for you!

Good Old Apple Pie
Crust
1-1/2 Cups Flour
1/2 Teaspoons Salt
1/2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
1/8 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cups Shortening or butter
Ice Cold Water

Find your children. Ask them to help you measure and then sift flour and salt. Work in the shortening or butter with a fork. Add enough ice cold water to make a stiff dough (the dough should be soft but not sticky). Roll out on a floured counter top until about 1/8 inch thick. Place the rolled out dough in a 9-inch pie plate and trim the edge to fit. Save the trimmed dough for the top.

Filling
6 cups sliced, peeled cooking apples
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 TB lemon juice

In a small bowl mix the cinnamon, cloves, ginger, flour, and sugar together. Mix in apples and lemon juice. Fill pie crust with the apple mixture. Using the remaining dough roll out the top, place on pie, and pinch all the way around the edge. Poke holes (or a pretty design) and bake in a 350 degree oven for about 55 minutes. The top crust should be golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Pregnancy Support Group

If you are pregnant and looking for support, Colleen Burke-Sivers, MA, is offering a pregnancy counseling support group starting on September 30th at her office on NE 42nd Ave. Details...

Though pregnancy can be a joy-filled time full of anticipation, many pregnant women often struggle with depression and anxiety, ambivalence, loneliness, a conflicted relationship with their partner or traveling the journey as a single parent, financial difficulties, decisions about work, and where to find trustworthy childcare to name a few concerns.

A weekly counseling and support group for pregnant women, led by experienced therapist, Colleen Burke-Sivers, M.A., is being offered at her office in NE Portland. It is an opportunity to share feelings about your pregnancy, and impending motherhood. Though it may be an opportunity to share resources, the focus will be on the interior experience, rather than on practical solutions.

The group will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00. It will run from September 30th through November 18th, 2009 (8 weeks).

The cost is $25 per session, or $175 for all 8 sessions if paid in full at first session.
For free initial consultation, call Colleen @ (503) 250-3123.
